Street in Hicksville renamed in honor of local hero

9/11 first responder Ray Pfeifer’s street sign keeps his spirit alive

On Saturday, Ballad Lane in Hicksville was renamed Raymond J. Pfeifer Way in honor of 9/11 first responder Ray Pfeifer.

“Amazing. We are so proud and honored. It's just perfect,” said Ray’s wife Caryn Pfeifer. “The day, the weather, my family. Look at everybody that's here to honor him. We just miss him so much."

A member of the Fire Department of the City of New York, Ray Pfeifer died just months ago from 9/11 related cancer. Pfeifer himself had fought tirelessly for sick 9/11 responders despite his own health problems.

At the street dedication, Ray's wife Caryn, daughter Taylor, and son Terence were joined by Ray's siblings, friends, colleagues, and neighbors.

“He was larger than life. The best advice I ever got from Ray was, act like you belong. Wherever you go in this world, in life, act like you belong, you belong. People gravitate toward that,” says Ray’s sister Maryellen McKee.

Caryn says she sees signs of Ray all the time.

“We see him in the backyard, yellow butterflies. We see yellow birds that you never see around here that come to the front of our window. We know that's him,” says Caryn.
