LONDON — Palace officials say Prince William's wife Kate has given birth to a baby boy.

Officials said Monday the baby was born at 4:24 p.m. and weighs 8 pounds 6 ounces.

The infant will become third in line for the British throne after Prince Charles and William.

Kate checked into a private wing at St. Mary's Hospital in central London early Monday morning.

William spent the long hours of labor at her bedside. This is the couple's first child.

NEW YORK — New York authorities say a helicopter carrying four Swedish tourists has landed in the Hudson River off Manhattan, but everyone has been rescued, according to the Associated Press.

The incident happened shortly before noon Sunday in the section of the river near 79th Street. The pilot and four passengers were taken to shore.

The fire department says the passengers were two adults and two children from Sweden.

In January, a small plane crashed and sank into the icy Hudson River off Yonkers. Two people were rescued.

PRINCETON — Princeton University has evacuated nearly 7,000 people on its campus and in off-campus university buildings after receiving a phoned-in bomb threat.

The university says state, federal and local law enforcement agencies are investigating and that bomb-sniffing dogs have been brought in to check buildings from administrative offices to dorms.

Princeton spokesman Martin Mbugua says the school received the threat around 9 a.m. Tuesday and decided to evacuate just before 10:30 a.m. The spokesman says officials took that time to assess the threat.

Rutgers’ University's bold new move into the Big Ten will come with bold new leadership – with a woman running the athletic department for the first time in school history.

Julie Hermann, most recently the No. 2 athletic administrator at Louisville, has been named the school’s new athletic director -- making her one of just three women at a BCS program to currently hold the athletic department’'s top position (N.C. State’s Debbie Yow and California’s Sandy Barbour are the others), according to two people familiar with the process.

TRENTON, N.J. — A standoff with an armed man who took multiple hostages inside a Trenton home has ended, and three children are safe, police said early Sunday. According to the Associated Press, word of the confrontation's conclusion came a short while after the standoff, which had had prompted the evacuation of nearby homes, entered its third day.

"The Trenton hostage situation is resolved, the three children are safe, and the area is secure," state police Sgt. Adam Grossman told the Associated Press, delivering a joint statement also from Trenton police and county prosecutors.

The Vatican has confirmed the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI effective February 28.

Vatican officials say the pope announced that due his deteriorating strength "I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me."

The 85-year-old pope was appointed the head of the Catholic Church in 2005 at the age of 78. The 265th pope to serve the church, Pope Benedict was one of the oldest new elected popes.

The last pope to resign was Gregory XII in 1415.
