After more than 70 years of privacy protection lapses, the U.S. government has released the 1940 census to the public.

Officials say anyone interested in reviewing the records will need the exact or approximate address of where the person or people were living on April 1, 1940. The address will help determine an official enumeration district to access the census records. Address information is searchable online by birth, marriage and death certificates and employment records.
