A barn in Setauket goes up in flames early Monday morning, destroying the barn itself and everything inside. And now one devastated homeowner is trying to figure out what happened.

A tenant who lives on the property says that she first noticed the fire around 3:30 a.m. Just a few hours later, there really was not much left other than the ribs to what used to be a beautiful barn with historic significance.

As firefighters doused water on the barn that was built more than 300 years ago, homeowner Judi Jones looked on in horror.

"It has a super unique history and it's gone…. I don't know how this happened. There was no electric in there. There wasn't anything," Jones said. She said construction on the barn was started by the Dutch when New York was called New Amsterdam. She says construction was eventually finished by the British and the barn served as a lovely place to keep things for gardening back when her property was used as a nursery for specimen trees in the 1940s.

"There’s no nails in there... I mean, it's 350 years-old! I mean, you can't replace that kind of history. It’s very, very sad. It was the appeal of the house when we first moved here," Jones said, who purchased her home and the barn back in 2007.

In addition to some feral cats that that lived there, Jones said some of the items lost include some equipment that belong to her son, including floor sanding, kayaks, and a scooter.

"I don't know what I’m going to do. I'm not going to rebuild… I'm too old for that. I wouldn’t be able to. You can't rebuild time, you know? 350-year-old. It was an oldie," Jones said.

And while a neighbor's home did sustain some minor damage, Jones said she feels fortunate that her home was not affected by the fire and that no one was hurt.
