Long Island residents in their golden years vie in Olympic-style ‘Golden Games’

Athletes from ages 75 to 90 compete in everything from basketball to wheelchair racing


The Golden Games took place at the Patchogue YMCA Friday which gave senior Long Island residents the opportunity to compete for gold. The Gurwin Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center was one of the teams with seniors between the ages of 75 to 90 that took part in the Olympic-style competition.

From the opening ceremony complete with torch bearers to wheelchair racing, the athletes who try out and are picked for the annual event. They practice regularly for months leading up to the event.

Last year, Gurwin athletes won gold medals in volleyball, bowling and women's distance throw.
