In an outstanding story of triumph and kindness, a former victim of an armed robbery received the keys to his brand new home in Mastic Beach.
Twenty years ago, Louis Fata was brutally attacked during an armed robbery at work.
"It was a horrific experience. They made the whole staff undress and they didn't like that I talked tough. They hit me 50-60 times with a gun, so I got pistol whipped really bad," Fata recounts.
Fata miraculously survived but he had to endure 10 surgeries to repair his severely damaged spine, leaving him with piles of medical bills and physical disability.
But today marked a brighter life-changing milestone after Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk County, along with elected officials, presented him with the keys to his new home.
Fata says his new house is a symbol of the family's ability to overcome countless physical, emotional, and financial obstacles.
"I couldn't be more grateful. Hope paid off, my determination paid off," he said.
