Hempstead officials vote to accept $75K grant to create Merrick playground

Board members move forward with playground that some residents think is being placed in the wrong part of the neighborhood

MERRICK — Hempstead town officials want to build a playground at the park on Wynsum Avenue and Illona Lane in Merrick but some residents don't want it there because of noise and traffic concerns.

On Tuesday, Hempstead Town Board members voted to accept a $75,000 grant from the county to add playground equipment to the park.

Town Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney spoke after the vote was passed, saying she's heard from a number of Merrick residents who have reached out to her about the playground.

"I look forward to working with all of them to make this park appropriate for the neighborhood and success for the families," Sweeney said.

Town officials say there will be more meetings to come to decide on details such as when the park will be built.
