State Sen. Todd Kaminsky introduces legislation against arming teachers in NY

Kaminsky's proposed legislation would prevent teachers from arming themselves in schools should federal law change

COMMACK — State Sen. Todd Kaminsky announced new legislation on Saturday that would prevent teachers in New York schools from carrying firearms should federal law change.

"More guns is not — and never will be — the answer," Kaminsky said.

According to Kaminsky, current New York law would still allow a pathway for teachers to carry guns in schools, should the federal government decide to scrap restrictions on guns in school zones. The new legislation would ensure that schools in New York remained gun free.

Kaminsky's proposed legislation comes after President Donald Trump's suggestion to arm teachers following the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people were murdered.
