Lake Ronkonkoma welcomes new wastewater treatment system

The system is focused on removing nitrogen from the water in the lake

LAKE RONKONKOMA — With a single flush, the newly-installed wastewater treatment system in Lake Ronkonkoma was put into action for the first time on Friday.

"It was great making that first flush to symbolize the cleaning of our lake and our waters," said Evelyn Volgraff, of the Lake Ronkonkoma Improvement group.

The new system focuses on removing hundreds of pounds of nitrogen from the water to protect water quality in the lake, part of a larger revitalization plan for Lake Ronkonkoma.

"We are taking back our water quality here, and that is critical for us in Suffolk County because we know how important water is to us," said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.
