LIRR summer schedule comes to end

Monday is the final day of the reduced summer schedule

Labor Day is the final day of the reduced summer schedule for the Long Island Railroad.

Commuter Nick Errera of Plainview says train service in July and August was better than he expected.

"15-minute delays, 10 to 15 minutes. Which is acceptable during rush hour. The trains have been packed though, that's very noticeable,” Errera said.

Now that repairs are finished at Penn Station, Amtrak officials say train service will be back to normal on Tuesday.

The infrastructure renewal came after two derailments in the spring at Penn Station. Many riders like Navpreet Sachdev say the track work seemed to have little impact on the trains.

"For the most part trains have been on time and going as scheduled. There's been a few times it hasn't worked out for me, but for the most part it's good," Sachdev said.

During the summer repair work, Amtrak officials suggested riders avoid Penn Station. Offering discounted fares for transferring in Long Island City or Brooklyn and providing bus and ferry alternatives.

But the buses and ferries will now stop running and the discounts for avoiding Penn Station will no longer be in effect now that the normal number of trains will be running.
