A healthy mind makes for a successful business

2nd-graders learn multiple ends of the restaurant industry

SMITHTOWN — Second-graders at the Smithtown Central School District's summer program are learning to operate a restaurant as a part of the Extended Year Program. Through various jobs, such as cooking, waiting tables, serving as a business owner, and even acting as a cashier and counting money, the students learned multiple sides of the food industry.

"We felt that this is our theme: 'Healthy Body, Healthy Mind,'" said Smithtown Central School District teacher Richard Hurley. "We develop a healthy restaurant and the children are learning various skills."

According to Hurley, the goal of the program is for the students to experience vast amount of jobs available within the one industry. The operation teaches the students about sequence and job specialization for running a successful restaurant.
