Islip experiences record-breaking winter weather

City officials urge residents to be cautious, aware of freezing pipes

ISLIP — Long Islanders are braving another bitterly cold day, as temperatures fall into bone-chilling conditions.

Islip experienced record cold temperatures, with the mercury falling to just 11 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday morning.

"It's so ironic because my son is skiing in New Hampshire where it was five below, and then he calls me this morning and says, ‘Oh, I hear you're having record cold temperatures in Islip,’" says Town of Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

Carpenter says they are reminding residents to keep their pipes from freezing as best they can.

"Everybody knows it’s cold, but sometimes you forget some of the obvious things like plumbing. If you have any plumbing that's on outside walls, north walls, if they're not insulated make sure you keep heat on them," says Carpenter.

The closest county warming center is in Hauppauge and is offering assistance to people who don’t have proper shelter.
