WESTBURY — Oct. 21 authorities have closed vehicular traffic to post avenue at the corner of Railroad Avenue so crews can finish work on the Post Avenue Bridge.

The bridge currently sits above traffic on Post Avenue and has a clearance of 11 feet and 10 inches, pending changes.

The MTA says the new height will be up to the current DOT standard of 14 feet, in hopes to end the string of car accidents that have gone on there.

Travelers can also expect service changes on both the Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma branches.

According to the MTA, all branches will be affected.

Bus service will replace the train between Mineola and Hicksville.

"The railroad placed a temporary speed restriction on the bridge. It was pronounced safe for travel at 7:30 a.m., but during the 50 minutes that elapsed 11 rush hour trains carrying an estimated 11,000 people were delayed," says MTA Chief Development Officer Janno Lieber.

The new bridge is expected to be in full service by Oct. 23.

Throughout the weekend travelers are urged to add 40-60 minutes to their commuting times on the trains and to use the south shore branches instead.
