PATCHOGUE — Almost 3,000 runners from all over the world ran the Suffolk County Marathon to support veterans on Sunday.

Runners started their trek in Patchogue, hitting the pavement to complete a marathon, half marathon, marathon relay, or 5K.

Proceeds from the races will go toward improving veterans services throughout the county.

This year's race included a "Road to Remembrance Trail" in honor of 31 local members of the military who were killed in action during Sept. 11.

The race was also supposed to include "Freedom Fest," a festival showing off the best of Long Island's food, businesses and music, but organizers canceled the festival due to inclement weather.

Sunday's marathon is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon, which is held in the spring.
