Firefighter arrested for allegedly starting fires since 2017

Christopher Cordeiro volunteers with Bethpage Fire Dept.

BETHPAGE — Christopher Cordeiro, 20, was arrested at the Bethpage Fire Dept., Engine Company 5 on Sunday, according to Nassau County police. Rather than putting out a fire as firefighters are known to do, Cordeiro is accused of starting five fires. Dating back to June 2017, the list includes a molotov cocktail fire, dumpster fire, abandoned house fire, fire in a wooded area, and a shed fire.

Cordeiro faced a judge without legal representation or family members in the courtroom this morning. He has been assigned a court appointed attorney. No date has been set for his next court appearance.

At his arraignment Monday morning, a Nassau County District Court judge set bail at $77,000 bond or $38,500 cash bail.

"You're supposed to be able to trust these volunteer firefighters, and they keep showing you can't," says Chris Ioannou of Bethpage.

In addition to arson charges, detectives say that Cordeiro faces a single count of criminal possession of a weapon in the third-degree.
