Bride, groom say ‘I do’ in first Hempstead Town beach wedding

Officials offer couples chance to tie the knot in 3 picturesque locations

LIDO BEACH — The Town of Hempstead is taking a new approach to help couples tie the knot by hosting weddings on the beach.

Elmer Marquez-Avendano and Marisol Hernandez-Aragon decided to trade town hall for a more picturesque setting on Saturday, surrounded by the sand and sea at Lido Beach Town Park.

"We've had applications increase by over 20 percent in the last year for marriage licenses. So, working together with Town Clerk Sylvia Cabana, we came up with this innovative solution," said Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen.

It’s the first of many more to come, according to Gillen who says the town will officiate weddings at three different beach locations on Saturday evenings throughout the summer which includes Point Lookout Park Beach and Hewlett Point Park Beach. And residents don't have to live in Hempstead to be eligible for a destination wedding, although Hempstead residents do get the first pick.

The town supervisor, clerk, and staff all volunteer their free time to make it happen, hoping to provide an option for young couples looking for the perfect place to make lasting memories.

"Rain or shine, we have a beautiful view here of our beautiful beach. And we want to make the day as special as possible for our residents," Cabana said.

Those who are interested in having a destination beach wedding in Hempstead can call the town clerk's office at 516-812-3014 to make a reservation.
