EAST NORTHPORT — Police say a man using a leaf blower outside his home on Clay Pitts Road was hit by a vehicle traveling east bound down the street just after 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Richard Oliveri, 35, sustained what officials called a severe head injury and was transported to Huntington Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Oliveri's family did not want to be on camera, but says they are devastated, and that something needs to be done about the numerous accidents in the area.

Neighbors say that in the last 12 years there have been at least four deaths, including Wednesday night's, in a 40-yard stretch of road.

Next door neighbor Mary Thomas says it was common to see Oliveri outside doing yard work and that he was always helping the neighbors.

"He always…you'd see him cleaning the leaves, you know, cleaning the yard, he's always taking care of the dogs," Thomas said.

Police say that the driver of the vehicle, 48-year-old James Monahan, was unharmed in the incident and remained at the scene.
