Island Harvest, Stop and Shop team up for a healthy, save haven

BETHPAGE — The Safe Center Long Island is a place where victims of domestic violence go as an escape from a scary, dangerous living situation at home.

Now, the victims of domestic abuse will be able to step into a food pantry filled with 6,000 pounds of healthy eating options for them and their families — thanks to a partnership between Island Harvest and Stop and Shop.

Studies have found that there is a link between health and hunger, and 21 percent of Long Island households served by local food banks have reported at least one family member with diabetes.

So while these victims are working on creating a safe and healthy lifestyle for themselves and their families, they will now not have to worry about being able to access healthy food.
