Hempstead town supervisor makes 3rd proposal for referendum on special elections

Laura Gillen: 'I firmly believe elected officials should be elected, not selected'

HEMPSTEAD — Town of Hempstead Supervisor Laura Gillen is proposing a town-wide special election to fill vacant board seats, her third time making the suggestion this year. Currently, if there is a vacancy, town board members are appointed to their seats, and Gillen wants the council to set a date for a hearing on the issue.

So far, the Hempstead Town Board has put a delay to Gillen's request for a referendum on special elections.
