Real-life heroes don masks and capes to help financially disadvantaged kids in Westbury

‘Heroes and Helpers’ program by Nassau police helps children buy holiday presents for their families

WESTBURY — The men and women of the Nassau County Police Dept.’s Community Affairs Unit dressed like superheroes to help 40 financially disadvantaged children from within the Westbury School District.

The “Heroes and Helpers” program helps create strong community relationships as the children shopped with police officers for holiday gifts for their families through an awarded target grant. The NCPD Foundation generously matched the grant doubling each child's spending limit.

Eight children from each of the five schools were identified by their respective schools as meeting the criteria for the grant.
