Half Hollow Hills East 11, Smithtown West 10

High school boys lacrosse game

The 3-seed Half Hollow Hills East Thunderbirds (15-3) are moving on to the Suffolk Class A final after beating the 2-seed Smithtown West Bulls (15-2) 11-10 in overtime in a semifinal at Islip High School. Hills East jumped out to an early lead and was up by 4 at halftime, getting a hat trick from Ryan Doran (who missed the teams' first meeting this season, when Smithtown West won by 5). The Bulls stormed back in the 3rd quarter, scoring 5 straight goals and taking their first lead on a Matt Caddigan goal with 6 seconds left. The game went back-and-forth in the 4th quarter, with the Thunderbirds' Zach Cosentino scoring the 10-10 goal with 1:22 left in regulation and Mike Monitto earning the overtime game-winner. Along with Doran's 3 goals for Hills East, Drew Martin had 2 goals and 2 assists, with Mike Gomez getting 2 and 1. Andrew Arce notched his first career 4-goal game- all in the 2nd half- for the Bulls, and Kyle Zawadzki earned 2 goals and an assist. Hills East will play either top-seed Ward Melville or 5-seed Connetquot, who are meeting in the other semifinal tonight; Hills East is the only team to beat Ward Melville this season, and have also defeated Connetquot.
