HOLTSVILLE — Suffolk County police shut down Long Island Avenue to traffic starting at Waverly Avenue as they investigated a stabbing that killed a man Sunday night.

Authorities say just before 8 o'clock, two men were involved in a fight at a construction yard at 192 Long Island Ave. While neither man is believed to have worked there, homicide detectives say one of the men used a knife to stab the other in the stomach and then fled the scene.

"There was a victim, a male victim, adult. He was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead," says Suffolk County Police Homicide Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer.

Right now, there's no word yet on the victim's identity. And while police have not been able to confirm any arrests, they say a person of interest is being interviewed.

Meantime, police say there is no reason to believe the incident was gang-related.
