EAST MEADOW — A special retirement ceremony was held Monday at Eisenhower Park by the Nassau Police Department for a mounted horse who was named after a police officer who died in the line of duty.

Shield MU4 of the Nassau County Police Department is officially retired. The "M" is for mike, named after former Police Officer Mike Califano who, after 12 years on the force, was tragically killed when his patrol car was hit by a truck as he conducted a vehicle stop. With his family present, along with Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder and Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, Mike's mount was taken off for one final time and handed to his son, Michael Califano Jr.

"There’s still not a day or a second that goes by that we don't think about him and we try and base off of what we think he would want. He wasn't very public so I think he would be embarrassed that a horse was named after him but it’s a great honor for the rest of us,” Califano Jr. said.

Mike the horse has been a member of the police force since 2011. He will be in the care of a Southampton police officer at their home stable.
