Hundreds remember beloved New Hyde Park teen that died in Fla. go-kart crash

Vigil celebrates the life of 16-year-old Leah Kuczinski

NEW HYDE PARK— Hundreds gathered at the Memorial High School football field in New Hyde Park Wednesday to honor and remember a 16-year-old who was killed in a Florida go-kart accident over the weekend.

Leah Kuczinski died on Sunday from her injuries. She was a cheerleader and field hockey player who loved the New York Mets and animals.

Her favorite musician, Hailee Steinfeld, came to her vigil after a teacher and fellow students took to Twitter to invite the artist. The request, which was made by Spanish teacher Tiffany Salcedo, was retweeted almost 2,000 times by fellow students.

Kuczinski was supposed to see Steinfeld this summer.

“Thank you so much for asking me to come here and honor Leah. You guys all had so many incredible things to say about her,” Steinfeld said. “I would have loved to meet her.”

Steinfeld, who Kuczinski was supposed to see in concert during the summer, played her hit song “Starving” in the teen’s honor.

With several memorials growing inside and outside of the high school, many students say she will live on through them

“It's a really sad thing that this happened but it’s a great thing that she left so many memories with so many people,” student Jalene Diaz said.
