Jury selection begins for Mangano-Venditto corruption trial

Former Nassau County executive is charged in alleged kickback scheme involving businessman Harendra Singh

CENTRAL SLIP — Jury selection begins for the upcoming trial of former Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, his wife, and former Supervisor John Venditto. Hundreds of potential jurors on this trial arrived at federal court and filled out questionnaires. All three were present as the judge heard from their lawyers and prosecutors on various motions.

Mangano is accused in a bribe and kickback scheme involving businessman Harendra Singh, who Mangano has maintained was a close family friend and recently pleaded guilty.

On Wednesday, the judge ruled that while the defense will be permitted to explore everything Singh said about his interactions with New York City Mayor de Blasio, there will be no questions about the government's decision not to prosecute the mayor. The judge said that if they do, they run the risk of a mistrial and sanctions.
