Driver from Brooklyn faces charges in connection to deadly multi-car crash in Lawrence

MINEOLA — The first of two drivers arrested in connection to Wednesday’s deadly multi-car crash in Lawrence was arraigned Thursday.

Zakiyyah Steward and 35-year-old Rahmel Watkins, both from Brooklyn, were arrested at the scene after the five –vehicle collision on the Nassau Expressway. Police say two people identified as Yisroel Levin of Brooklyn and Elisheva Basya Kaplan of Far Rockaway, died in the crash when the car that they were in burst into flames.

Detectives have not said if Steward and Watkins knew each other, or if they were speeding or drag racing around 1:42 a.m. when the crash took place.

Steward is now facing multiple charges, including driving while ability impaired by the combined influence of drugs and alcohol, and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Police say Watkins is dealing with a medical issue and that his arraignment on DWI charges will take place when it's medically practical.

Meantime, the online publication The Yeshiva World reported that the victims of the crash were a young couple who got engaged only a week ago. The report also stated that the couple were supposed to get married in three months.
