PD: Man arrested in murder of Binghamton student from Westbury

Authorities say 22-year-old Haley Anderson was found dead in apartment of Orlando Tercero, who fled country

WESTBURY — An arrest has been made in the death of a 22-year-old Haley Anderson, a resident from Westbury who was found dead in an off-campus apartment in Binghamton University on Friday.

Authorities say Orlando Tercero, who was also a nursing student at Binghamton, fled the country on Friday hours before police found Anderson’s body. They were notified Tuesday night that he was detained overseas in Nicaragua.

According to multiple reports, Anderson and Tercero were romantically involved, but when Anderson broke it off, Tercero became "obsessive" with her.

Anderson was a nursing student at Binghamton University and had a just a few months left to graduate. After friends could not get in touch with her on Friday, police went searching for her and she was found dead in Tercero's apartment.

"She was such a beautiful young lady and had such a bright future ahead of her. Everyone who knew her loved her and she will be sorely missed, and our hearts go out to the family," said family friend Mary-Anne Berry.

Anderson grew up in Westbury, and those who knew her are hoping justice will be served for what the suspect has allegedly done.

"He deserves to be in jail for life to do that. You destroyed a family. That's something unacceptable," said neighbor Adriano Costa.

Nicaragua does not have an extradition treaty with the United States, and no official plan of action has been made.
