Police: Manhasset daycare worker caught on video slapping 1-year-old in back of head

Jeanine Sammis of Hewlett charged with attempted assault, endangering the welfare of a child

MANHASSET — A daycare worker is accused of hitting a one-year-old child in the back of the head.

Police say Jeanine Sammis of Hewlett slapped the child at the daycare center, Kindercare, on Northern Boulevard.

According to detectives, Sammis was observed hitting the toddler multiple times throughout the month of September. They say her behavior was reported to management and an investigation led to her arrest.

Police arrested the 36-year-old Thursday and charged her with attempted assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Det. Lt. Rich Lebrun says a witness recorded video of an incident on Sept. 29.

"Videotape does show the daycare worker slapping the child on the back of the head several times. Fortunately, the child was not injured," Lebrun said.

Kindercare sent FiOS1 News a statement about their now former employee that reads:

"We take all concerns about our teachers and staff seriously and follow a very specific protocol anytime a concern is raised. Part of that involves looking into the concern and reporting this concern to our outside partners, such as CPS and the police."

FiOS1 News knocked on Sammis' door at her Hamilton Avenue home for a comment but no one answered.

She was released after her arrest and is due back in court on Tuesday.
