From Manhattan to Montauk: South Setauket man pledges to walk 125 miles

To raise awareness for diabetes, dad takes the extra mile for his daughter

NORTH BELLPORT — One Long Island dad is on a journey to raise awareness and help find a cure for type 1 diabetes — by walking from Manhattan to Montauk.

Michael Ehrlich started his 125-mile journey from Manhattan to Montauk around 9:30 Monday morning. His goal is to raise awareness for type 1 diabetes during his three-day trek and raise over $25,000 dollars.

The south Setauket dad wanted to take a stand and help find a cure for type 1 diabetes when his 13-year-old daughter, Rachael, was diagnosed almost a year ago after collapsing and falling to the floor during a family vacation.

“I am doing this to raise awareness and … there are a lot of children and adults struggling with type 1 diabetes. Really the awareness and donations really go a long way,” Ehrlich says.

A person is diagnosed with the disease when their body doesn't make enough or too little insulin, which can lead to high blood sugar.

Ehlrich hasn’t taken many stops during his journey, bringing only necessities along for the ride.

So far, he has received a tremendous amount of support from Long Islanders, which helps fuel Ehlrich on his mission.

“My daughter thinks dad is pretty cool for doing this,” he says.
