Mother, daughter graduate Stony Brook together

Mother: ‘It is the culmination of everything wonderful that you could imagine’

STONY BROOK – Helena Roura and her daughter Anastasia Roura graduated Stony Brook University together on Friday. The pair has not only gone to the school and commuted together the last few years, but also attended classes together and helped each other study.

For Helena Roura, it's a dream more than 20 years in the making, she earned degrees in anthropology and sociology. Meanwhile, Anastasia Roura earned her degree in woman and gender studies.

Both women said they have big plans for the future, however right now are taking in the moment and the immense pride they feel in each other.

"I’m so proud to say that I’ve accomplished earning my bachelor degrees. But I’m most excited to watch Anastasia - the first row, right next to her, because this is the moment every mom wants," Helena Roura said. "This is the moment we've all been waiting for!"

Both mother and daughter could barely hold back their excitement as they officially became alumni.

"I’m so proud of how hard my mother has worked on both of her degrees, and I'm just speechless, completely speechless," Anastasia Roura said.
