State attorney general investigates New York American Water over rate hikes

Governor Andrew Cuomo called the private company's billing practices 'abusive'

ROCKVILLE CENTRE — New York American Water customers are demanding action and accountability after receiving high water bills, and state and local officials are working to meet their needs.

Governor Andrew Cuomo says that high water bills may be the result of consumer fraud.

The New York Attorney General's Office says it's been investigating New York American Water, a private company that serves Long Island communities.

"It is incredible," Gov. Cuomo said. " And it is abusive and it's extortion. I think the whole situation is a major utility company abusing the consumer."

A public forum, organized by Sen. Todd Kaminsky, was held on Thursday evening. Over 800 Long Island residents signed up to voice their concerns to New York American Water executives and state regulators.
