Officials: 3 Nassau police officers indicted in island-wide drug ring

Ringleader allegedly planned heist with others to steal from casino high roller

RIVERHEAD — Three Nassau County police officers and several others were indicted in a Long Island-wide drug ring, officials announced Wednesday.

Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini says the indictments brought against a total of 13 people are the result of a wire-tapping grand jury investigation. Authorities say they also discovered a plan to pull off a heist at a local casino.

Three of the indictments concern 11 people, including two Nassau police officers, in connection with a drug distribution ring. The fourth indictment involves three individuals, including a Nassau officer in a casino heist plan. Sini says they are related because the ringleader of the drug distribution ring, 29-year-old Daniel Caceres, allegedly conspired to commit a robbery at Jakes 58 Casino in Suffolk. Caceres allegedly sold marijuana, cocaine, and Xanax since October of 2016.

"The following evidence was recovered at these search warrants: 10 firearms, four were loaded; 15 pounds of marijuana; 9 ounces of cocaine; various quantities of heroin, Xanax, and mushrooms," Sini said.

Prosecutors say Caceres had marijuana and other drugs delivered to co-conspirators and then distributed the drugs. The ring of co-conspirators is facing several drug charges.

“No one is above the law," Sini said.

Sini says nearly 100 pounds of marijuana was delivered there that Caceres ordered.

Through this investigation, information developed that Caceres was allegedly planning on committing a robbery at Jake's 58 Casino, involving Nassau officers Bruce and Christina Moeller. They were planning on robbing a high roller and an armored truck.

The casino heist plan was uncovered through the drug investigation, officials say.

Caceres faces 12.5 to 25 years on the drug charges and two to four years on the robbery conspiracy. Those sentences can be served consecutively.
