The alleged shooter is still at large

HEMPSTEAD — Police in Nassau County have made an arrest in a Christmas Day shooting that killed a Hempstead father, but family and friends are still asking questions.

It was just after 6 p.m. on Christmas when Raphael Cepeda headed to pick up his 11-year-old daughter from the train station. But he never made it. He got caught in the crosshairs of gunfire on Terrace Avenue amid alleged gang warfare. He was shot several times and died soon after.

Officials say Cepeda was not the intended target.

“I got a 35-year-old father that left his house on Christmas Day after wrapping his daughter's gifts. He leaves behind an 11-year-old daughter because two individuals that are both Blood members were shooting at a rival gang here in Nassau County,” Acting Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said.

Under arrest in connection with the murder is 16-year-old Shameq Sullins who has been charged with murder. Antoine Foster, the alleged shooter, remains at large.

On Terrace Avenue, there's a memorial for Cepeda, and a GoFundMe page was started to raise money for his family.
