FREEPORT — Authorities say a person is in custody after Freeport police were involved in a foot chase on Pine Avenue, in which shots were fired late Sunday night.

While police have not been able to confirm how many shots were fired, Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy says officers were responding to a 911 call when one person fired several shots at close range. The officers then chased the person, with one of the officers returning fire.

"This just goes to show that the officers' life is in danger every time they're out there. It's amazing to think they're going on a routine call, and all of a sudden, they're being shot at," Mayor Kennedy said.

Authorities say no one was hurt, but the officers were taken to South Nassau Hospital for evaluation. Detectives will interview the officers later in the day.

At this time, there's no word as of yet on the name of the suspect or any charges.
