Police officers save man trying to commit suicide at Westbury Plaza

Nassau County police say they see an increase in suicide attempts during holiday season

MINEOLA — Four Nassau County police officers stopped a man who was attempting to commit suicide on Monday morning.

A man, 57, was on a roof at the gallery at Westbury Plaza in Garden City. He was standing precariously on the edge of the roof about 30 feet up — over a parking lot — just before 10:30 a.m. Two officers went to the roof, while two others were on the ground below. Practically in unison, they swiftly saved the man, bringing him off the edge.

“This time of the year, it's tough,” says Nassau County acting Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder. “A lot of people go through a lot with their families, a lot of stress with the holiday season. Last year in 2016, we had 81 fatal or attempts to commit suicide. This year we're at 52, but this time of year we start to see an increase.”

If you need to talk to someone, you're encouraged to call the Crisis Hotline at 516-227-TALK. If the situation is more dire, like the it was Monday morning, call 911.
