Suffolk police cruisers are getting a high-tech upgrade on the cheap

Hundreds of vehicles to be fitted with tablets by next year


WEST ISLIP — All 450 Suffolk County police patrol cars are going to have Dell tablets installed by the end of 2019, and they are less expensive than the old laptops they used to have.

"It’s significantly less expensive while being more capable," Suffolk Police Chief Stuart Cameron said.

The tablets will enable officers to carry the devices out of the car, providing full access to data. They will work as a direct phone line to the police cars, and there are additional benefits like video conferencing and access to electronic documents on protocol.
