Caught on video: Man steals sacramental wine from Port Jefferson church

Suffolk PD on the hunt for suspect wanted for theft committed in July at the Infant Jesus Roman Catholic Church

PORT JEFFERSON — Suffolk County police are asking for the public's help in locating a man who they say stole sacramental wine from the Infant Jesus Roman Catholic Church on Myrtle Avenue.

Detectives say the theft of the wine happened on July 13 just before 10:30 a.m. The wine had not yet been consecrated.

For Roman Catholics, when the wine is consecrated, it means that it has been made into the blood of Christ.

At Mass, Catholics have the option of sipping from the Blood of Christ after receiving the Eucharist.

Police say suspect caught on surveillance was wearing shorts and a white T-shirt.

It's unclear if he's a member of the parish or if he's known to be from the area.

Anyone with information is asked to call Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
