Taste test decides which district has the best tap water on Long Island

Last year’s winner was South Huntington

FARMINGDALE — It's National Drinking Water Week and one organization is kicking it off by hosting an annual taste test competition for the best tap water on Long Island.

A refreshing and thirst-quenching competition took place at the Farmingdale State College campus center in the 33rd annual Best Tasting Water Contest.

The Long Island Water Conference hosts the contest to let the word out that the tap water on the island is safe to drink.

"There is a lot that goes into tap water. It’s not as simple as pulling it up out of the ground. It’s treated, monitored, and we meet very strict state and local standards," said Charles Savinetti.

People tasted samples from 24 different water providers throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties and then cast their ballots for which one is best. The contest is over a three-day period, and some have already made it to the final round.

"I was informed that the Oyster Bay water district won yesterday morning’s event and we are in the finals, so I'm very proud of that," said Robert McEvoy.

The winner of the water contest gets a trophy and bragging rights for the next year.
