Uber is now the 'official ride of the Stony Brook Seawolves'

The partnership allows students to get discounted rides throughout the year

STONY BROOK — A new partnership between Uber and Stony Brook University will provide students and staff with special discounts.

Many are becoming more and more dependent on ride-sharing apps like Uber which means the university's students and staff can take part in some big saving benefits.

The new three-year campus-wide sponsorship deal will give all students and staff discounts on rides at select times, according to Chris Murray, the university's general manager of corporate partnerships.

“Throughout the year, during heavy transportation times: holidays, finals, Uber will offer discounts to help students get home,” Murray said.

And there are several designated pick-up points called “Uber Zones” located right on campus, making it convenient for students to hop into a ride.

“There will be no confusion. Students and drivers will know where to meet, where to go, and how to get going with Uber,” Murray said.

Students say they're ecstatic about the partnership and will be taking part.

“Parking here is pretty hard, even waiting for the bus is pretty hard, so if Uber gives me a discount I'm going to use it,” SBU student Greyson Lendry said.

As part of the deal, Uber will sponsor in-game contests and student-focused marking campaigns. Additionally, Murray says the surrounding community could use the services to attend sporting or other on-campus events.

"Fans can get dropped off right at our stadium to alleviate any parking issues we have," he said.
