Man from West Islip among victims of tragedy in Parkland, Fla.

Aaron Feis, a football coach, reportedly died while shielding students from gunfire

WEST ISLIP — On Long Island, family members of a victim of the Florida school shooting mourn the loss of a loved one. The tragedy hits home in West Islip, where Raymond Feis lost his grandson in the shooting. Feis says his grandson, Aaron Feis, grew up in and played baseball in the Suffolk County community before moving to Florida where he became a football coach.

"You never think these days are going to happen," the elder Feis said. "Aaron, he loved the Lord. He was always kind, he always respected us, did everything we needed to do."

Published reports say the younger Feis died protecting students during the gunfire. Many describe him as a hero.
