Woman sentenced to year in jail for cancer scam

Officials say Brittney Schmidt, her husband used the money to buy drugs on Long Island

MINEOLA — A woman who used a boy with cancer to scam people out of thousands of charity donations will serve jail time.

Brittney Schmidt was sentenced to a year behind bars on Monday for her role in a scam where she went door-to-door with her husband, Vincent Fina, collecting money for Gianni Incandela, a Staten Island boy that was a stranger to them. Schmidt and Fina allegedly collected money, later used on drugs in Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island. After both pleaded guilty, they were set to get five years’ probation, drug treatment, and community service but the two did not show up to their sentencing.

During her sentencing, the judge told Schmidt that he hopes she will reflect on the hurt she caused and that she will change her life.

Her husband is due in court in about two weeks.
