Police identify woman struck and killed by bus in Lindenhurst

Police say Maureen McCloskey, 64, was crossing Montauk Highway when she was hit


LINDENHURST — Police have identified the pedestrian who was struck and killed by a bus Thursday night on Montauk Highway as Maureen McCloskey.

Detectives say 64-year-old McCloskey of West Babylon was crossing the road near Wellwood Avenue when bus the bus she was hit.

One Lindenhurst Middle School who witnessed the accident said many people jumped out of their cars to help the woman.

McCloskey was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The Suffolk Transportation Bus driver, 60-year-old Michael Devine of North Babylon, stayed at the scene.

Meanwhile, this makes some people a little more nervous to cross Montauk Highway.

Within the last six months, several pedestrians have been hit in Lindenhurst, in close proximity to where the accident occurred Thursday night.

In August, a vehicle struck a teenager at the intersection of Sunrise Highway and North Delaware Avenue. Also this past august, Pauline Aluska was hit and killed at the intersection of Montauk Highway and South 13th Street.

In May, Diane Aluska was hit and killed leaving church on South Wellwood Avenue.
