Police arrest alleged MS-13 member in connection with murder of Uniondale teen

Nerlin Omar Chacon-Ruano is accused of shooting Miguel Ayala-Hernandez to death

Police have arrested an alleged member of MS-13, 19-year-old Nerlin Omar Chacon-Ruano, who is accused of murdering a teen in Uniondale as an act of retaliation.

“The facts of this case demonstrate a most brazen and brutal homicide. We allege the defendant, Nerlin Omar Chacon-Ruano, fired a gun at least ten times at the victim, striking him with 9 bullets,” Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas said.

It happened at Walnut Street and Maplegrove Avenue on the night of Sept. 15, according to officials.

The victim, Miguel Ayala-Hernandez, knew his shooter but was not a member of MS-13, officials say.

“Miguel had chased Nerlin in front of other MS-13 members and embarrassed him,” NCPD Det. Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick said.

Officials are investigating the possible involvement of a second person in connection with this incident.

Chacon-Ruano, who police say is not a legal resident of the U.S., is being held without bail.

Officials say this isn’t the only alleged gang member arrested in recent days.

“Last week, we went out and we sent a message to the community of those that are in that MS-13 world and that gang world. We went out and made 58 arrests last weekend, going into the neighborhood, zeroing in on gang members we are aware of,” Acting NCPD Commissioner Patrick Ryder explained. “We're gonna keep that pressure on that they're not accepted in this county.”
