Construction began on a new home for a woman and her two children in Mastic Tuesday morning thanks to a community effort.

Nail by nail, with each swing of the hammer, this is the stuff dreams are made of. In this case, the American dream come true.

The house built from the ground up will fulfill Mirlande Victor's long journey home to Mastic. But not in the traditional sense, that is.

Victor, a mother of two and dialysis technician, was born in Haiti, but America became her second home, her chosen home. And for the very first time, she becomes a homeowner.

This is all thanks to Habitat for Humanity. All the volunteers make dreams come true regularly. Suffolk County Land Bank and Suffolk County National Bank officials also made it possible.

The house will be ready in about ten months for Victor and her two children to move into.
