The television comedy series "Crashing" returns to HBO. The series stars stand-up comic and show executive producer Pete Holmes playing a version of himself.

Holmes describes his character about, "a religious guy whose wife leaves and he's homeless and he has to sleep on the couches of other comedians."

Holmes also based “Crashing” on his own personal experiences.

"Everything in the show is based on something that happened to me," Holmes says.

As to why the show’s name is “Crashing”…

"Because I crashed on couches," Holmes explains.

Holmes works with Judd Apatow, who also serves as an executive producer. Apatow is best known for directing the movie, "The 40-Year-Old Virgin." Holmes credits Apatow for the show’s comedic elements.

"Well, he's the best! Our process is, I tell him what really happened and then he makes it more interesting and funnier," Holmes says.

Holmes says audiences can expect more laughs in season 2 of "Crashing."

"Lots and lots and lots of wonderful comedians, and also a slightly wilder Pete who is going to be dating first time and really making headway into comedy for the first time," Holmes says.

Comedian Jaimie Lee also co-stars on the series.

"My role is Ali Reason, she is a very hard working, determined stand-up comedian, kind of up-and-coming in the New York scene and she sort of guides Pete through a different facet of the New York stand-up scene," Lee explains.

The new season of "Crashing" premieres Jan. 14 on HBO.
