NCPD officers honored for rescuing man attempting to jump off balcony

The man was standing on a ledge at the Galleria Mall in Westbury when officers came to his aide

WESTBURY — Nassau County officials honored two officers Monday for their bravery after they saved a man who was trying to take his own life by attempting to jump off a second-story balcony.

In a surveillance video, police officer Michael Vergano could be seen slowly inching his way towards a man who was standing on top of a ledge. Suddenly his partner Steven Liguori grabbed the man from behind, and together, the two officers safely pull him to the ground.

Officer Liguori was first at the scene after responding via radio to reports of a man on the second-story balcony of the Galleria Mall in Westbury. Shortly afterward, Officer Vergano got there and distracted the man while officers Edward Hoctor and Michael O'Brien secured the area below.

"When we saw him up on the ledge we treated him as if he were one of our own family members and we gave our heartfelt sentiments to try and make him not hurt himself," Officer Michael O'Brien said.
