RIVERHEAD — With many local supermarkets buying produce directly from local farms, the demand increase is prompting farmers to snatch up more land to grow additional products. However, the decrease in acres over the years has resulted in farmers competing for land. To deal with the dilemma, Lyle Wells, owner of Wells Homestead Acres, says he grows his product on leased farm land. Wells adds that he leases his own acres for nurseries and sod farms.
