Residents who were ordered to evacuate from their homes as a result of the raging Suffolk County brush fires sought refuge at an American Red Cross shelter set up in the Riverhead Senior Center. The center provided food, clothing and a place for evacuees to sleep in. Shelter manager Scott Wheaton said there were mental health workers and nurses on hand to counsel and provide medical assistance to those affected.
