Story of Dramatic Rescue in Newark Quickly Spreads
NEWARK, N.J. – When Mayor Cory Booker arrived home Thursday to find a nearby home up in flames, he leapt into action. Members of Booker's security detail had already spotted the fire and got three people inside out safely, but Zina Hodge was still yelling for help. Although a bodyguard initially held the Mayor back, he broke free and ran inside the building.
"I thought that we weren't going to make it... because by the time I got to her the flames in the kitchen were pretty bad, and it was rolling over the roof and down the other wall. So I just lifted her the best as I could... and just ran as quickly as I could through the kitchen," Booker said.
The fire, which appears to have started in the kitchen, is under investigation. Meanwhile, the heroic rescue has inspired a Twitter hashtag and other memes.
