OYSTER BAY — Lawmakers and activists gathered Friday to push for the preservation of the Long Island Sound. New York Democratic Senator Kristen Gillibrand and Democratic Congressman Steve Israel are sponsoring legislation that would preserve millions of federal dollars dedicated to protecting the sound. Gillibrand said the sound is not only a recreational area for local residents, but also a stimulant to the local economy because it creates jobs and tourism.
